The Junior High program at Progressive Academy is a student-focused learning community guided by the school’s core values of diversity, inclusiveness, respect, and a love for learning. Above all it is a community of engaged students and teachers working together to give meaning to their worlds – at home, in the classroom, within their local communities and the world at large – by developing their intellectual, ethical, and creative gifts. Students are encouraged to progress vertically through the curriculum as they are able, demonstrating competence at each step along the way.
The Alberta Education Program of Studies is the starting point in the core academic subjects – Math, Science, Social Studies, English Language Arts, French, Physical Education, and Health. All of our Junior High students get training in a musical instrument as part of our concert band, and can choose from a wide range of electives including music, performing and fine arts, working internships, robotics, photography, videography, international travel, sound and light production, 3D design, and more.
Instruction includes a wide range of styles including direct instruction, discussion, drills and practice, group work, individual research, and projects requiring application and demonstration of knowledge and skill. All styles used are designed to guide our students to become proficient independent learners who can work at a pace most favourable to their needs and abilities. With a low student-to-teacher ratio, there is ample opportunity to support students’ individualized course work and, further, for one-on-one instruction.
Woven throughout the delivery of our high level program is a focus on the development of time honoured personal values. Learning at Progressive Academy moves beyond the classroom in preparing students to respond to their surroundings with wisdom, compassion, and resilience.
