The Junior High program at Progressive Academy is a student-focused learning community guided by the school’s core values of diversity, inclusiveness, respect, and a love for learning. Above all it is a community of engaged students and teachers working together to give meaning to their worlds – at home, in the classroom, within their local communities and the world at large – by developing their intellectual, ethical, and creative gifts.
Following the Alberta Education Program of Studies, students are exposed to the core academic subjects – Math, Science, Social Studies, English Language Arts, Physical Education, and Health – as well as a range of options, including French, Music, Fine Arts, and Career and Technology Studies.
With its variety and flexibility, the small class size of Junior High program at Progressive Academy offers the ideal setting to pursue this course of studies. Like at other schools, there is some direct classroom instruction, but students are guided to become proficient independent learners who can work at a pace most favorable to their needs and abilities. With a low student-to-teacher ratio, there is ample opportunity to support students’ individualized course work and, further, for one-on-one instruction.
Progressive Academy also offers specialized programs that give students the chance to enhance their learning and personal growth in unique ways. These include the PA Mountain Adventure School, the annual China Study Tour, the world-class First Robotics Club, and a range of internship placements. Further, given the many opportunities for community outreach – with organizations such as Hope Mission, Me to We, and Save the Children – learning at Progressive Academy moves beyond the classroom in preparing students to respond to their surroundings with wisdom, compassion, and resilience.
